One Father, many names – ابوالجبين، يافا، فلسطين

Very interesting observations, I found after some research.

We all know that our great-grandfather was Haj Muhammad (Abuljebain), Son of Abdel Wahad (Abu Jebain) Son of Muhammad (Abu Jebain) Son of Abdel Wahad (Matbouli) Son of the Holy Honorable man ( قدس الله سره) Ibrahim Al-Matbouli.

Now the story starts as this, Ibrahim, our great-great-great-grandfather, is the decedent of Othman Ibn Afan, from the father’s side, and Al Hasan Ibn Ali Ibn Abi Taleb, from the mother’s side, and Zein Al Abideen Ibn Al Hussein Ibn Ali Ibn Abi Taleb, from the grandmother’s (father’s mother) side, was a holy religious scientific scholar in Mecca, and he was born around 1662 in Al Hejaz.

In 1700 Ibrahim, who became also an important merchant, went to Gaza, in Palestine, via Egypt, for trading. He liked it in Palestine, and lived there, till his death around 1730, and was buried near Isdoud,(اسدود) and it is assumed that the famous grave for Al Matbouli, visited by many people, and located near Isdoud in Palestine, is for this holy man In Egypt Ibrahim’s 3 sons were born.

Ibrahim 3 sons were: The first son, Khalil, went back to Egypt, and got married and lived in Egypt till his death and was buried there, Khalil kept Al Matbouli name and established the famous Al Matbouli family in Egypt, who had a lot of property and real-estate. Khalil had a son called Abdel Ahad, and Abdel Ahad later had a son called Badr Eddine, who was buried in Cairo. Ibrahim’s second son, Hasan died young in Egypt. Ibrahim’s third Son, Abdel Wahad 1^st, (Our Great Great Grand Father) was born around 1690, and was 10 years old when his father went to Palestine. Abdel Wahad 1^st took after his father and became a religious Sheikh, and became a well-known Merchant. Abdel Wahad 1^st married a Palestinian woman from Gaza (غزة), and had 2 sons (Muhammad 1^st and Ibrahim 2^nd) born there, and Abdel Wahad 1^st became fully assimilated in the Palestinian Civil society.

Abdel Wahad 1^st’s sons, Muhammad 1^st and Ibrahim 2^nd, became merchants as their father and grandfather. But the difference was that they were fully Palestinians by birth, and by assimilation, and got married to Palestinian women. We know that Abdel Wahad 1^st first son Muhammad 1^st was born around 1730, and was the first to be called Abu Jebain (2 Pockets), for his wealth, and generosity. Due to trading opportunities Muhammad 1^st roamed all over Palestine as a merchant, married a woman from Yazour (يازور), near Jaffa, but he settled in Beit Jibrein(بيت جبرين) , where his 4 sons were born. Abdel Wahad 1^st’s second son, Ibrahim 2^nd had few sons who kept the name Matbouli, Later on Muhammad 1^st’s sons and their cousins the sons of Ibrahim 2^nd Matbouli, spread in many towns but most of them settled in Dora (دورا), where they had a feud with a tyrant governer called Al A’asfouri (العصفوري), and they killed him, and were forced to flee Dora. Now this generation of Abu Jebain-Matbouli, has uncles and great uncles from the Grandmother’s and Mother’s side in Gaza and Yazour (Jaffa) areas. Looking at the geography of that area, we see that Gaza and Hebron regions are very much integrated between themselves which explains the following.

Muhammad 1^st sons and his brother Ibrahim 2^nd sons spread all over Palestine, Muhammad 1^st Second son Abdullah Muhammad, went to Dhaheryah (الظاهرية)near Hebron (الخليل) and had many sons (established our branch there). Muhammad 1^st’s Fourth son, Ahmad Muhammad went to Herbia (هربيا) , near Gaza (where we have our branch there), Ahmad had 2 sons, Muhammad, and Abdel Rahman, while Muhammad 1^st’s First son, Abdel Wahad 2^ndMuhammad our great-grandfather, who was born around 1770, and his Third son Ibrahim 3^rd Muhammad fled to Gaza. From Gaza they left around 1802 and went to Jaffa (يافا) and lived there till Abdel Wahad 2^ndMuhammad died around 1820, after he became a famous merchant there. Along with Abdel Wahad 2^nd Muhammad and Ibrahim 3^rd Muhammad many of their cousins’ sons fled to Jaffa with him, that’s the reason we find houses of Matbouli family in old town Jaffa next to Abuljebains’ houses as per the 19^th century Jaffa city map. But Muhammad 1^st’s Third son Ibrahim 3^rd Muhammad Abu Jebain, left Jaffa and went to Safad (صفد)in 1805 (to established our branch there), one of Ibrahim 3^rd Muhammad grandsons went to Houran Syria, and established the branch in Houran (حوران) , Ibrahim 3^rd Muhammad had Khalil, who in turn had Ahmad Deib Abu Jebain, who had 5 sons (Muhammad Khalil, who went to Houran), while Ibrahim, Abdulla, Sa’ied, and Abdul Ghani, stayed in Safad,

Abdel Wahad 2^nd had 2 Sons and a daughter, all were born in Jaffa, Haj Muhammad 2^nd, our Great Grandfather, who was born around 1810, the daughter, Swaleh, was born in 1812 (was never married), and the second son, Hassan was born in 1815,

Haj Muhammad 2^nd, and his cousins, the sons of Ahmad and Abdullah added Al to their last name, like his and became Abuljebain أبوالجبين , while the sons of Ibrahim 3^rd kept the name without Al. Haj Muhammad 2^nd became the Chief Merchant, as the Head of the Chamber of Commerce (nowadays) of the City of Jaffa, while his brother was called Hassan Sawaleh (صوالح), since Hasan was spoiled by his mother who called him by his sister’s name due to Sawaleh’s death at a young age and the mother’s agony for keeping her memory. Hasan Swaleh was an Ottoman Employee, who had the keys of the Gates of Jaffa. Haj Muhammad 2^nd, was the first person to build a house in the new area outside the walls, in what was called Al Manshiyah (the new establishment) (المنشية) , and later on they called the street were that house was built, the Abuljebain Street, in Jaffa.

Haj Muhammad 2^nd (Abu Al Abed), married a woman from the Sakijha family, from Jaffa, had five sons, and five daughters, the eldest daughter of Haj Muhammad, Latiefeh, married her cousin Ali Hassan Sawaleh Abuljebain, the second daughter, Fatimah, married a man the Sha’rawi family, and the other three daughters married a man from Abu Lughud family (One after the other) Abu Lughud, married Haniefeh, then her sister Maryam, after her death, and later on, the last sister, Zbeideh after the second’s death). As for the sons, the First one was Abdel Wahad 3^rd, who died without having any Children, and the other four sons are our four grand fathers, Ahmad (married his cousin Fatoum Hassan Swaleh Abuljebain, and later on another woman from Ayyad family), then Amin (b. around 1845) (who was married to a woman from Al Barquoni family), then Abdullah (who was married to a woman from Al Fiqui family, and another woman from Al Salehi family), and the last son Rashid (who married 4 women from the families of Sha’rawi, Abu Qao’ud, Abu Dabouseh, and Sahioun) .

Ahmad had 5 sons, Zuhdi (b. 1890) (m. a woman from the family of Dimishquieh from Lebanon), Hilmi (m a woman from the family of Murabit from Algeria/Syria), Jamal (m. a woman from the family of Alsheikh Fadli from Syria), Fadl Eddine (n.m), and Rashad (n.m), and 5 daughters, Natheira (m. Tantoura), Huson (m. Qshair), Aisheh (m. Haidar), Zulfa, my Grand-Mother (m. her cousin Saleh Amin), and Dawlat (n.m).

Amin had 6 sons, Salim (m. a woman from the family of Abu Karr), Saleh (b. 1888), my Grand-Father (m. his cousin Zulfa Ahmad, and a woman from the family of Al Taji after Zulfa’s death), Eissa (m. his cousin Rifqa Abdullah), Musbah (m. a woman from the family of Touqan (Nablus)), and had a daughter named I’nayah, Mahmoud (n.m), and Fawzi (m. his cousin Fayzeh Shaker Rashid), and 3 daughters, Kawkab (m. a man from the family of Ayyad), Raeiseh (m. a man from the family of Abu Lughud), and Raeifeh (m. a man from the family of Abu Radwan).

Abdullah had 5 sons, Naiem, Ibrahim (m. his cousin Kulthom Kamel Rashid), Eid (m. his cousin Subhieh Kamel Rashid), Ali (m. 2 women from the families of Kotmitto (Haifa), and Shaa’ban), and Mustafa (n.m), and 4 daughters, Raoofeh (n.m), Rabiha (m. a man from the family of Haidar), Rifqa (m. her cousin Eissa Amin) and Subhieh (m. a man from the family of Saa’saa’ (Al-led)).

Rashid had 4 sons, A’aref (n.m), Kamel (m. a woman from the family of Kostero), Shaker (m. his cousin Khaldieh Ali Hassan Swaleh Abuljebain), and Muhammad Ali (m. a woman from the family of Beiraqdar), and 2 daughters, Amira (m. man from the family of Abu Lughud, and after his death she married a man from the family of Bleiha), and Sakineh (m. a man from the family of Sha’rawi).

Hassan Sawaleh Abuljebain had 2 sons, Ali (m. his cousin Latiefeh Muhammad 2^nd Abuljebain), and Mousa (died young without marriage) and the three daughters of Hassan Sawaleh were, Fatoum (who married her cousin Ahmad Muhammad 2^nd Abuljebain), and Amneh, who married a man of Al Amad family, and the third, Haniefeh, married a man of Idries family. Ali, the son of Hassan Swaleh had Khaled (who married his cousin Mutie’a Musa Hassan and after her decease married a lady from Al Najjar family), Mousa 2^nd, Khaldieh (m. her cousin Shaker Rashid Abuljebain) and Rasmieh (married a man from Idries family). Mousa 1^st had only one daughter (who got married to her cousin Khaled Ali Hassan Swaleh).

Summary:

Ibrahim 1^st Al Matbouli (Hejaz-Egypt-Palestine) had 3 Sons:

1- Khalil Al Matbouli (Egypt), had a son called Abdel Ahad, and Abdel Ahad later had son called Badr Eddine.

That is the Story, of our family and when I mention any name I relate to one of those four.

Down below I will illustrate the different spellings of the last names that I know of, keeping in mind that all the family members who immigrated to Egypt had their “J” in the name turned into “G”, and the same happened to the family members who went to Syria and Lebanon, since the sound of the English “J” in French is “G”. Also there was always an intention to differentiate between Jebain (2 Pockets) and Jabin (Forehead) or Jibin (Cheese), that is why you will find most of our family members who immigrated to Syria, and Lebanon, had “O” or “U” in jebain. And you would find “Ja”, “Je”, “Ji”, “Jo”, Ju”, “Ga”, “Ge”, “Gi”, “Go”, and “Gu”. Accordingly you would also find BAIN, or BAYN, or BBIN, or BEEN, or BEINE, or BEN, or BIN, or BIEN, or BINN, while you would see, the Abu (father) spelled Abo, Abu, and Abou, and sometimes taken out completely, also sometimes you will see the name written in 2 words, or hyphenated (-), with “al”, “Al”, “el”, “El”, “il”, “Il”, “ejj”, “Ejj” or as one word, and lately we found the whole name had been reduced to AJ, or A.J. or Aj .
